Laminated Double Glazing

Laminated double glazing is a type of insulated glass unit (IGU) that combines two features:

Double glazing – Two panes of glass separated by a sealed air or gas-filled gap (spacer bar), which provides thermal insulation and reduces heat loss and noise.

Laminated glass – One or both of the panes is made of laminated glass, meaning two layers of glass bonded together with a clear plastic interlayer (usually PVB – polyvinyl butyral). If the glass breaks, the fragments stick to the interlayer instead of shattering into dangerous shards.

Safety: Clear laminated glass is designed to remain intact even when shattered. If the glass breaks due to impact, the interlayer holds the glass fragments together, reducing the risk of injury from sharp shards. This makes it a preferred choice for areas where safety is paramount, such as glass railings, balustrades, and high-traffic areas.

Security: Clear laminated glass enhances the structural integrity of the glass, making it more resistant to breaking and penetration. This property is particularly useful for applications where security is important, such as storefront windows or areas vulnerable to forced entry.

UV Protection: Some types of clear laminated glass include interlayers that offer protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This helps prevent fading and damage to interior furnishings, flooring, and artwork that can be caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays

Design Flexibility: Clear laminated glass can be used in various architectural and design applications without sacrificing aesthetics. It allows for larger expanses of glass, creating an open and spacious feel while still maintaining safety standards.

Hurricane and Impact Resistance: In regions prone to hurricanes or strong storms, clear laminated glass is often used for windows and doors. It helps protect against flying debris and maintains the integrity of the building envelope during extreme weather events.

UV Bonding: In addition to PVB or EVA interlayers, there are also advanced techniques that use UV-cured adhesive interlayers to create clear laminated glass. This can provide improved optical clarity and durability.
